Quick answer

The ATO hasn't published its 2026–27 closure dates yet. Last year it closed from noon on Wednesday 24 December 2025 and reopened at 8.30am on Friday 2 January 2026. Online services stayed up, so you could still pay and lodge, but nothing was processed or visible until systems came back. Plan on the same pattern and pay before Christmas.

Key points

  • Last year the ATO closed from noon AEDT Wednesday 24 December 2025 to 8.30am AEDT Friday 2 January 2026. Its 2026–27 dates weren't published when this was written.
  • During the 2025–26 closure, online services and the website stayed available. Payments could still be made, but weren't visible until systems came back online.
  • Lodgments sent during the closure weren't processed or displayed until after 2 January.
  • The ATO says BPAY payments can take up to 4 business days to reach it, and Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day all remove business days.
  • The October–December 2026 quarterly BAS is due Sunday 28 February 2027. Aim to have it paid by Friday 26 February.

Every December, owners ask the same thing: if the ATO shuts for Christmas, does a payment or lodgment made during the break still count? The short version is that you can usually still submit, but you shouldn’t expect anything to be processed, matched or visible until the ATO is back in January. That’s a problem if your cash plan assumes you’ll see a payment land before you go on holiday.

This guide sets out what the ATO did last year, what that implies for 2026, and the dates to work backwards from.

Does the ATO close over Christmas 2026?

At the time of writing (30 October 2026), the ATO hasn’t published its 2026–27 closure dates. It normally does that in late November or early December, in its newsroom and on its system status dashboards.

What we do know is what happened last time. The ATO’s notice for the 2025–26 break said its offices would close from noon AEDT on Wednesday 24 December 2025 and reopen at 8.30am AEDT on Friday 2 January 2026. Its website and online services stayed available throughout.

Two lines in the ATO’s related notices matter most to a business owner:

  • You can still make payments during the closure, but they “won’t be visible until our systems come back online”.
  • You can still lodge and report, but the ATO won’t process and display lodgments until after 2 January.

Treat that as the working assumption for this year. The public holidays are fixed: Friday 25 December, Monday 28 December (the additional day for Boxing Day, which falls on a Saturday) and Friday 1 January 2027, in every state and territory.

What’s actually open and what isn’t?

Thing you might need What to expect over the break (based on 2025–26)
ATO website and online services for business Available
Paying by BPAY, card or direct credit Possible, but not visible on your account until systems return
Lodging a BAS or IAS Possible, but not processed or displayed until after the break
Phone and office support Closed for the closure period
Refunds, payment plan changes, account updates Wait until the ATO reopens

The practical point: the money moves with your bank, but the ATO’s record doesn’t update. If you pay on 30 December, your bank statement may show it leaving while your ATO account still shows a balance owing until January.

How many business days does a Christmas payment need?

The ATO says BPAY payments can take up to 4 business days to be received. Over Christmas, business days are scarce. For a business in any state, here is what a payment made before the break looks like if it takes the full 4 business days:

You pay on Business days counted Latest arrival
Fri 18 December Mon 21, Tue 22, Wed 23, Thu 24 Thu 24 December
Tue 22 December Wed 23, Thu 24, Tue 29, Wed 30 Wed 30 December
Wed 23 December Thu 24, Tue 29, Wed 30, Thu 31 Thu 31 December
Thu 24 December Tue 29, Wed 30, Thu 31, Mon 4 January Mon 4 January

This assumes Friday 25 December, Monday 28 December and Friday 1 January aren’t business days. If the ATO’s closure also means it doesn’t count 29 to 31 December as normal processing days, a payment could appear later than the table shows. Our business day counter does the counting for your state.

The takeaway is to stop thinking of 24 December as your deadline. For anything that needs to be received and recorded before the break, mid-December is the real date.

What’s due around the break?

Not much, but what is due is easy to forget:

  • Monthly BAS for November is due Monday 21 December 2026, a normal business day. If you’re a monthly lodger, that’s the one that collides with the closure window.
  • Monthly BAS for December is due Thursday 21 January 2027.
  • Payday Super doesn’t pause for the ATO. Super for a pay run on or just before Christmas still has to be received by the fund within 7 business days, and the holidays push that date later. We walk through it in the public holidays calendar.
  • The October–December 2026 quarterly BAS is due Sunday 28 February 2027.

That last one is where owners go wrong, because the ATO’s rule about weekends is generous. The ATO says that if a due date falls on a weekend or public holiday, you have until the next business day. Its guidance for tax professionals counts a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory. Monday 1 March 2027 is Labour Day in Western Australia, so the next business day under that rule could be Tuesday 2 March. The ATO’s own due-dates page is the authority, so check it in February.

Our advice is simpler: don’t plan to use the extension. Aim to have the quarterly BAS paid by Friday 26 February 2027, so a processing delay or a long weekend never decides whether it’s late.

Which payment method is safest before the break?

They all work. They don’t all show up the same way.

  1. BPAY from your business account. Well-understood, and the ATO publishes its processing time (up to 4 business days). Use the right reference number and double-check it.
  2. Direct credit with your payment reference. Fine, but a wrong or missing reference can cause the payment to sit unallocated, which is harder to fix when nobody’s answering the phone.
  3. Card. Quick to send, but check your own card’s limits and any fees before relying on it for a large amount. Our guide to payment limits and fast payments explains what moves when.

Whichever you choose, keep the receipt or bank confirmation and screenshot the date and time. If your ATO account still shows a balance in the first week of January, that record is what you’ll point to.

What should you do now, in order?

Here’s a sequence that works for most owners, working backwards from the break:

  1. Early November. Note which ATO payments fall between now and the end of February, including monthly BAS, any instalments and Payday Super.
  2. Late November. Check the ATO’s newsroom and system status pages for the confirmed 2026–27 closure dates. Update your calendar.
  3. By Friday 11 December. Lodge anything that can be lodged. Don’t wait for the 21st.
  4. By Friday 18 December. Make any ATO payment you want received and recorded before the break.
  5. Before you close. Make sure whoever is covering for you knows where the receipts are and what’s still to come.
  6. First week of January. Check that payments and lodgments have been recorded. If not, send the receipt.

If a December payment is tight, step 1 is when you want to find out, not 22 December. Our ten-day cash calendar and Christmas close-down cash plan show how to line up the other outflows against the same dates.

A worked example

Here’s an illustrative example. A Brisbane electrical contractor pays staff fortnightly and lodges BAS monthly. Their November BAS is due Monday 21 December. Their biggest customer has said it will pay on its usual run, but that run falls on Tuesday 22 December and the money may not arrive until the 29th.

The owner counts back. If the BAS payment goes out on Friday 18 December by BPAY, it should arrive by Thursday 24 December. If it waits for the customer’s money on 29 December, it’s late, and nothing will show on the ATO account until January regardless. The gap is the BAS amount for about ten days.

That’s the kind of short, dated gap we see around this time of year, and short-term business funding can bridge it. The important point is to ask before 18 December, because approval and signing need business days too.

If the cash isn’t there on the day you need it

Funding doesn’t stop for Christmas, but the timelines do tighten. Smaller unsecured amounts can sometimes be funded the same day, and property-secured funding is typically a matter of days, but every step still needs business days, and the ones before the break are limited. Speed is always possible, never promised.

If you can see a pinch point in the next few weeks, check your options now while the calendar still has room in it.

Planning your December payments? Let’s take the pressure off

Nobody wants to spend the first week of the break wondering whether a payment landed. If you can see a December payment that your cash flow won’t quite cover, or you’d just like a buffer in place before the shutdown, we’d be glad to help.

Enquiring takes about 60 seconds, and your credit file isn’t touched just for asking. We don’t send your details out to a pile of lenders, so your phone won’t light up with calls from strangers. A real person reads your individual situation and calls you to talk it through. Please fill the form in accurately, including the amount and the date you need it, so we can match you with the right option first time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ATO open over Christmas 2026?

Not in the usual way. The ATO closes its offices and phone support for an end-of-year break, and 25 December, 28 December and 1 January are public holidays in every state. Its online services have stayed available through the break in recent years. Check the ATO's newsroom and system status pages in late November or early December for the confirmed 2026–27 dates.

What were the ATO's closure dates last year?

The ATO closed from noon AEDT on Wednesday 24 December 2025 and reopened at 8.30am AEDT on Friday 2 January 2026. If it follows the same shape this year, the equivalent would be a closure starting around Thursday 24 December 2026, but treat that as a planning assumption rather than a fact until the ATO confirms it.

Can I still pay the ATO during the closure?

Yes. Last year the ATO said payments could still be made during the closure but wouldn't be visible until its systems came back online. A payment sent at the last minute can therefore look unpaid for days, even though it's on its way. Pay early enough that it's received before the due date.

Will a BAS I lodge on 23 December be processed before Christmas?

Don't count on it. Last year's ATO notice said lodgments made during the closure wouldn't be processed or displayed until after 2 January. A lodgment made on 23 December may well be processed before the break, but the safest approach is to lodge a week or more ahead and keep your confirmation receipt.

When is the October to December quarter BAS due?

The standard due date is 28 February 2027, which is a Sunday. The ATO lets you lodge and pay on the next business day when a due date falls on a weekend or a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory. Monday 1 March 2027 is Labour Day in Western Australia, so the next business day under that rule may be Tuesday 2 March. Confirm on the ATO's due-dates page, and don't plan to use the extra days.

What's the last day to pay the ATO before Christmas 2026?

If you pay by BPAY and need it received before the break, count 4 business days back. Counting Christmas Day and Boxing Day's substitute holiday of Monday 28 December as non-business days, a payment made on Tuesday 22 December would be due to arrive by Wednesday 30 December at the latest. The ATO's closure may mean it doesn't show until January. Paying by Friday 18 December is safer.

What if I'm short on cash for a payment before the break?

Raise it early. Funding for a legitimate business payment depends on business days for approval, signing and settlement, and the ones before Christmas are limited. An enquiry takes about 60 seconds and doesn't touch your credit file.
