Quick answer
Australia's 'tomorrow' isn't the same everywhere. During daylight saving, Sydney and Melbourne are three hours ahead of Perth, and Queensland stays on standard time. Public holidays also differ by state, so the next business day in one state can be a holiday in another. For next-day funding, check whose clock each cut-off runs on and whether tomorrow is a business day where the work is being done.
Key points
- Daylight saving runs from Sunday 4 October 2026 to Sunday 4 April 2027 in NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the ACT.
- Queensland, WA and the NT don't observe daylight saving, so the gaps between states change twice a year.
- Public holidays differ by state — Labour Day, King's Birthday and Melbourne Cup all fall on different dates.
- For ATO due dates, a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory counts, giving everyone until the next business day.

“I need it tomorrow” sounds simple until you notice that tomorrow starts at different times across the country, and that it might be a holiday in one state and an ordinary Monday in the next. For anyone dealing with interstate suppliers, landlords, head offices or lenders, these differences can quietly eat half a business day.
This page sets out the time zones, the daylight saving switch and the public holidays that matter for next-day funding, and how to plan around them.
How far apart are Australian business hours?
Australia has three standard time zones, and daylight saving adds a further twist because only some states use it. According to the NSW Government, daylight saving for 2026–27 starts at 2am on Sunday 4 October 2026 and ends at 3am on Sunday 4 April 2027. New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT observe it. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t.
Here’s what that means when it’s 9am in Sydney:
| Location | During daylight saving (Oct–Apr) | Outside daylight saving (Apr–Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart | 9.00am | 9.00am |
| Brisbane | 8.00am | 9.00am |
| Adelaide | 8.30am | 8.30am |
| Darwin | 7.30am | 8.30am |
| Perth | 6.00am | 7.00am |
The gap between the east coast and Perth widens to three hours in summer. For a Perth business, a 3pm cut-off on the east coast arrives at noon local time. For an east-coast business dealing with a Perth supplier, it works the other way: you have extra afternoon to get funds to them.
Which cut-offs are on someone else’s clock?
On a next-day timeline, it helps to list who’s involved and where they are:
- The person you’re paying. If a supplier in Adelaide needs funds by 10am their time, that’s 10.30am in Sydney during daylight saving.
- Anyone who must sign. A co-director in Perth waking at 6am Sydney time won’t be signing documents at your 8am.
- Settlement agents and solicitors. Settlement times are set in the local time of the property’s state.
- The lender and your bank. Processing windows are set by each institution.
Write the deadline in both time zones on your to-do list tonight. It sounds fussy, but it’s one of the simplest ways to avoid a surprise at 2pm tomorrow. If you’re unsure how your deadline translates, enquire tonight and a specialist will map it with you in the morning.
How do public holidays change the next business day?
Public holidays are set by each state and territory, and several of the big ones fall on different dates. Some examples from the Fair Work Ombudsman’s published lists:
| Date | Holiday | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Monday 5 October 2026 | Labour Day / King’s Birthday | NSW, ACT, SA (Labour Day); Queensland (King’s Birthday) |
| Tuesday 3 November 2026 | Melbourne Cup | Victoria |
| Monday 28 December 2026 | Boxing Day, or the additional day for it | Every state and territory |
| Monday 8 March 2027 | Labour Day / Canberra Day / Adelaide Cup / Eight Hours Day | VIC, ACT, SA, TAS |
| Monday 1 March 2027 | Labour Day | WA |
| Monday 27 September 2027 | King’s Birthday | WA |
Some holidays apply only to part of a state, such as certain regional show days. If you’re unsure, check your state’s list before relying on a date.
A practical example: if you enquire on Friday 2 October 2026 in Sydney, the next business day isn’t Monday — it’s Tuesday 6 October, because Monday 5 October is Labour Day in NSW. In Victoria, Monday is an ordinary business day. Our money-tomorrow checker accounts for statewide holidays automatically, and the business day counter lets you count forward from any date.
What does the ATO do when a due date lands on a holiday?
The ATO is generous here. It says that if a lodgment or payment due date falls on a weekend or public holiday, you can lodge or pay on the next business day. It also treats a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory as qualifying, so the extension applies nationally even if your own state is working that day.
That can buy a business a day it didn’t know it had. It doesn’t change how long payments take to reach the ATO, though, so pay by the fastest method available. Our page on a BAS due tomorrow covers the options.
How should I plan around a long weekend?
Long weekends are where next-day timelines most often break. If you know a bill falls just after a long weekend:
- Treat the last business day before the weekend as your real deadline.
- Enquire at least two business days ahead if you can.
- Get every signer’s availability confirmed before they head off.
- Ask the person you owe whether a payment on the next business day is acceptable.
Our page on Friday and long-weekend funding goes through this step by step, and the 2026–27 public holiday cash calendar flags the dates to watch.
Let’s work out your tomorrow together
Time zones and holidays are easy to trip over when you’re under pressure. Tell us your state, the amount and when the money needs to land, and we’ll plan around the right clock. The enquiry is about a minute’s work and carries no credit check. It stays with one team rather than being fired off to many lenders, and a real person calls you to talk it through. Please be exact about your state and the deadline — that’s what makes the timeline accurate.
Frequently asked questions
Which states change their clocks for daylight saving?
New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory stay on standard time all year.
If tomorrow is a public holiday in my state, can funding still happen?
Usually not on the holiday itself, because banks and the people involved generally aren't working. Plan around the next business day, and use tonight and the holiday to get documents ready so the file is complete when business resumes.
My supplier is interstate. Whose deadline counts?
Theirs, if the money has to be in their account by a certain time. Ask them to confirm the time and time zone, then work backwards from it.
Does a state public holiday change ATO due dates?
The ATO says that when a due date falls on a weekend or a day that is a public holiday for the whole of any state or territory, you can lodge or pay on the next business day.
How do I count business days in my state?
Use the business day counter on this site. Choose your state, a start date and the number of business days, and it skips weekends and statewide public holidays.
